Osmo: Storyboarding
Project Overview
My Role
I worked on a team of 3 designers to research, ideate, and create the storyboard. We communicated with the client on a weekly basis to receive feedback on our ideas and sketches.
The Process
1) Define scope and goal
2) User and Product Research
3) Ideation
4) Final Storyboard
The Client
Osmo is an interactive game system that combines the iPad with physical play. They use a 'reflective AI' technology to create educational games for children of all ages.
The Challenge
Osmo wanted to create a Youtube ad that will be featured on their landing page. The video will showcase the fun and the educational value from all five of the games they currently offer.
Define Scope and Goal
After an initial consult with the client, we determined the final deliverable would be a storyboard for a 1 minute 30 second video advertisement that will be featured on the Osmo landing page. The project consisted of 3 designers and spanned 4 weeks.
Our goal was for the target purchaser to move through the resistance flow, as seen on the right, and to understand the value Osmo provides.
The video will show views:
1) How Osmo works
2) The educational value Osmo provides
3) Osmo allows for collaborative play
User and product Research
Osmo's target users are 5-13 year old kids; however, the ones purchasing Osmo for the kids are parents and grandparents. Therefore, when designing the storyboard, we focused on very different personas. We needed to appeal to the target market of parents, grandparents, and teachers and convey Osmo in a way they will understand. Below are two personas Osmo provided us for consideration.
To gain a better understanding of how Osmo is used, we obtained copies of the games and tried it out ourselves. We also conducted product research by going through Osmo's website and their existing videos and noting what works and what doesn't work as well. Based on prior user interview data, one of the main issues with the current landing page video was that the situation it presented didn't feel believable to parents.
Ideation
During the ideation phase, we started by jotting down all our ideas, voting on the best ones, and arranging them into a timeline. We went through several iterations after receiving input from the client.
We divided the entire concept into 5 main sections, one for each game, with transition scenes in between each:
For each section, it would:
- Demonstrate how the specific game works
- Provide an additional benefit of Osmo (educational, fun, easy to setup, collaborative, etc)
- Show a specific target age range
Final Storyboard
After several iterations and multiple sketches, we put together a final storyboard concept of our proposed 1 minute 30 second video ad for Osmo. Osmo is currently in the process of filming and putting together the video and will be A/B testing the video on their landing page once that is complete. Check out our final deliverable below!
